I love the atmosphere of this old hammam. In my opinion, the interior has just the right patina. I was also lucky that I was almost alone, and they were very flexible with my schedule. It was a unique experience, something I had never experienced before. Afterwards, I felt purer than I had ever felt in my entire life. Everything was completely unspectacular and very friendly. In my opinion, the price was fair too. However, the entrance is a little difficult to find if you don't know where it is (see attached photo).

The Hammam at Radisson was such a relaxing, blissful experience. My partner & I, had such an amazing time. The staff is very friendly and super kind. I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a Hammam in Istanbul. Very clean, professional & courteous. Worth the price. They also said it's cheaper if you book with them directly however, I have not validated that.

Top things to do in Istanbul

Step into Istanbul’s rich past with a Turkish bath experience

Once the favored retreat of Sultans, hammams were bustling communal spaces that captured the essence of Ottoman life. Today, these architectural masterpieces offer everything from time-honored cleansing rituals to indulgent spa-like treatments. Whether you’re looking for some ‘me-time,’ a cultural deep dive, or a blend of both, an Istanbul hammam promises an unforgettable escape.

Arrival, changing, and preparation

On arrival, you’ll check in, store your belongings in a locker, and change into a pestemal (traditional cotton wrap). Attendants provide slippers and guide you to the warm room. This stage is about settling in, hydrating if needed, and letting your body adjust to the heat.

Steam & Relaxation Phase

You’ll enter a heated marble chamber where warm steam opens pores and softens skin. Lie on the central göbek taşı (heated stone) to relax muscles and loosen tension. This phase typically lasts 10–20 minutes and prepares your body for the exfoliation ahead.

Scrub and massage (more optional add-ons)

An attendant uses a kese mitt to scrub away dead skin, followed by a foam wash and light massage. Depending on your package, you can add oil massages, face masks, or hair washing. It’s a thorough, hands-on cleansing ritual, not a spa-style deep tissue massage.

Cool down & rest up

After the treatment, you’ll rinse off, move to a cooler room, and rest with water or tea to rehydrate. Your body temperature gradually normalizes, and you can relax on loungers before getting dressed. Many visitors feel refreshed, slightly drowsy, and deeply relaxed post-session.

Things to know before booking Turkish bath experiences

  • Stay near Sultanahmet, a historic neighborhood with iconic hammams like Cemberlitas, Hurrem Sultan, and Cagaloglu, offering a mix of ‘classic’ rituals and luxurious spa treatments, just minutes away from Hagia Sophia andthe Blue Mosque.
  • Pick modern options like Taksim Hammam and Spa and Sisli Hammam for a spa-like ambiance, complete with personal treatments and sauna facilities, or go for historic hammams like Cemberlitas and Cagloglu for an authentic Ottoman experience or opt for
  • Choose between a classic shared marble hall like Cemberlitas, where the ambience is social and historic, or a private room experience at places like Taksim Hammam and Spa or Gedikpasa, offering more seclusion and personalized service.
  • Sessions can range from a quick 45-minute cleanse to 120-minute+ premium rituals with foam massage, oil treatment, and add-ons. Most hammams offer tiered packages, so you can opt for a basic scrub or a full, extended spa-style experience.
  • Enjoy traditional Turkish treatments with exfoliation, foam massages, and extras like extended sessions, Turkish tea, and homemade sherbets. All hammams provide essentials like lockers, changing rooms, and pestemals** **(light cotton towels) to ensure your comfort. You may need to bring your own swimsuit (if required), underwear, hairbrush, and deodorant. Towels and shampoo are often included, but bringing your own skincare or hair products is common for post-treatment grooming.
  • Most Turkish hammams, including Cemberlitas and Hurrem Sultan, have separate sections for men and women with gender-matching therapists to ensure privacy. Acemoglu Historical Hammam is perfect for couples or families, offering mixed-gender sessions to enjoy the experience together without compromising on tradition or comfort.
  • Most traditional hammams, especially the ones housed in historic buildings like Cemberlitas, Hurrem Sultan, and Gedikpasa are not wheelchair accessible. Some recently-renovated bathhouses like Taksim Spa and Sisli Hammam offer accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, and accessible changing rooms.
  • If you are pregnant or have health conditions like heart issues, it’s best to consult with your doctor before visiting a hammam. Hammams are also not ideal for toddlers, with most recommending a minimum age of 12 to ensure comfort and safety.

  • Best time of the year: November to March offers the most comfortable experience. Cooler weather makes the heat feel therapeutic, and there are fewer tourists competing for slots.
  • Peak vs off-peak: Evenings, weekends, and summer months are peak periods, so expect higher demand, busier steam rooms, and possible wait times. Weekdays, shoulder seasons, and early hours are off-peak, giving you faster service, quieter spaces, and a more relaxed overall experience.

  • Arrive early to change, store valuables, and allow your body to adjust to the heat.
  • Hydrate well before and after; steam rooms dehydrate faster than you realise.
  • Skip heavy meals beforehand; a light stomach makes heat and massage more comfortable.
  • Wear a swimsuit only if required. Many hammams provide pestemals for modesty.
  • Tell the attendant if you have skin conditions or prefer a gentler scrub pressure.
  • Remove jewellery; metal heats quickly and can cause burns during steam sessions.
  • Bring your own skincare or hair products if you want post-bath grooming control.
  • Plan downtime afterward. Your body may feel relaxed, sleepy, and slower than usual.
No Photo camera sign. Forbidden sign. Camera prohibited symbol.
  • Shower briefly before entering steam areas; it keeps pools and stones hygienic.
  • Respect silence. Conversation should be low and brief to maintain a calm atmosphere.
  • Follow gender-separated sections unless the hammam clearly states mixed entry hours.
  • Photography is banned inside bathing zones to protect guest privacy.
  • Tipping attendants (tellak/natir) is customary; 10–15% of your package is standard.
  • Do not use strong perfumes or oils that may affect shared steam spaces.
  • Sit or lie on the provided towels to keep marble surfaces sanitary and dry.
  • Limit session time if dizzy or overheated; attendants can guide you to a cooler room.

How to do a hammam bath (step-by-step)

  • Settle into the heat: You’ll first enter the warm marble chamber and lie on the heated göbek taşı. Spend 10 to 15 minutes here to let your pores open and muscles loosen.
  • Initial rinse: Using the metal bowls at the basins, pour warm water over yourself to prepare the skin for exfoliation.
  • Deep exfoliation: A tellak (attendant) uses a coarse kese mitt to scrub away dead skin. The pressure is firm but not painful, and you’ll visibly see skin peel off.
  • Foam cleansing ritual: Your body is covered in a cloud of soap bubbles, followed by a relaxing lather massage that cleanses and softens the skin.
  • Final rinse: Buckets of warm water are poured over you to wash away foam and residue, leaving skin clean and smooth.
  • Optional upgrades: Depending on your package, you may continue with an oil massage, hair wash, clay mask, or other spa-style treatments.
  • Cool down & rest: You’ll move to a cooler lounge area, dry off, sip water or tea, and let your body return to normal temperature before getting dressed.
